Q: How are my assets protected, and who is the custodian and administrator of my assets?
In the case of both SMAs and IMAa, the investment manager does not hold any of the assets it manages for you. Your funds flow into and out of an account in your name which is established between the investor and their nominated administrator/custodian/broker. Your assets are held directly in your name.
Q: Who owns Adansonia Capital?
Adansonia is a privately-owned investment manager, where management own 100% of the business. Co-invested alongside investors, we’re strongly aligned and incentivised to deliver for our clients.
Q: What is an Individually Managed Account (IMA)?
An Individually Managed Account (IMA) agreement allows investors to retain direct ownership of each asset in their portfolio, while appointing an investment manager to make portfolio decisions within their established tailored investment strategy.
Adansonia’s IMA Service offers clients a portfolio management service tailored to each client’s individual requirements. Each client’s portfolio is managed separately to all other clients, and managed in accordance to their investment objectives, asset mix preferences, existing investments, tax status and risk appetite.

Q: What is a Separately Managed Account (SMA)?
A Separately Managed Account (SMA) is a portfolio of individual securities that are owned directly by an investor and managed on the investor’s behalf by a professional investment manager. Most commonly SMAs are offered as an investment option via a platform.

Q: When is an investor deemed a wholesale investor?
To invest in Adansonia’s IMA service an investor must also be classified as a wholesale investor. To be classified as a wholesale investor the person or entity must (i) have net assets of at least $2.5million, or a gross income for each of the last two financial years of at least $250,000, or (ii) be a professional investor. Please refer to the Corporations Act 2001, Volume 4: Section 761G, for the full definition (link here).
To be classified as a wholesale investor under the above asset or income criteria a certificate issued by a qualified accountant confirming this must be supplied.
Q: What administration is involved in setting up my assets so that they can be managed under Adansonia’s IMA service?
After you establish an Adansonia IMA agreement and an account with your chosen custodian, either cash or an existing portfolio of assets can simply be transferred to that custodian. Your assets are still directly owned by you in your name. There is no pooling of assets as in a managed trust or fund. No transaction costs or capital gains are triggered and the cost base on each of your assets is unchanged.
