Benefits of Separately Managed Accounts (SMAs)

A Separately Managed Account (SMA) is a portfolio of individual securities that are owned directly by an investor and managed on the investor’s behalf by a professional investment manager. Most commonly SMAs are offered as an investment option via a platform.

SMAs are increasingly preferred by investors given the following advantages:

  • A professional investment manager actively manages a portfolio of shares that you own directly.

  • SMAs have excellent transparency. See the exact position and price of each security held by you in your portfolio at any time and, see all past transactions.

  • Better understand your investment cost base, and how and why the value of your portfolio changes over time.

  • Through direct (or beneficial) ownership, dividends, franking and other tax credits flow directly to you.

  • The tax base is yours. You’re not exposed to change-in-ownership laws and embedded tax liabilities that can adversely impact investors in a unit trust structure.

  • SMAs are portable. As the underlying securities are held directly in your name, the portfolio can be moved to and from managers and/or advisers without crystallising a capital gains event.

  • The investment manager has no access to any of the assets it manages for you. Your funds flow in and out of an account in your name that you establish with one of the platforms and their broker(s) supporting the product. The investment manager simply advises your platform as to the make-up of your portfolio.

  • Platform benefits include efficient portfolio administration, custody services, execution, settlement, portfolio reporting and tax reporting. You have full access to the details of your portfolio at all times.
